SCOUT NEWS - BADGE GOES GLOBAL!

Posted: 26/02/2006

Dan Harlock was the winner of a recent competition to design a new badge for the 1st Fenstanton & Hilton Scout Group, with runners up prizes going to Adam Harlock and Harry Stevens.

The badge was needed as direct result of some of the Scout Troop attending Eurojam, with 10,000 others, in the summer of 2005. As it was our first really big camp in recent years we hadn't realised that many Scouts took along badges to swap with those from around the world. The badges they obtain are then added to their collection on their camp blankets. Whilst we managed to get some District and County badges down to them it got them thinking that we ought to have our own.

A competition was thrown open to the 80 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts ¡V who range in age from 6 to 13. They had to create a badge with a design that would last now and in the future. The challenge was to use as few colours as possible and to be no larger than 2.5" x 2.5".

The winning design was kept secret from all the Scouts (except Dan of course!) until the finished product arrived and the first ones were presented to Dan. The new embroidered badge includes our Group name and a Scout logo. Dan hopes the "text talk" message at the bottom of "It’s gr8 2 meet u" will appeal to his fellow Troop members and be easy for Scouts from around the world to recognise. The handshake on the badge is left-handed which is how all Scouts shake hands with each other.

Most of our Scouts are taking part in CamJam 2006 for a week, with around another 2,500, and 7 of the Troop are off to the International Camp Site at Kandersteg in Switzerland for 2 weeks. Both camps are this summer. So we're sure our special badge will soon find it's way around the world :-)

This is a great time to be involved, as next year Scouting celebrates it¡¦s first centenary! All 28 million Scouts around the world will be taking part in local, national and global celebrations. So if you are 18 or over why not come and help make the fun happen? For further details please contact Louise Clover on 01480 831715.
